  • 11. Starting the Conversation on Diversity: Thinking About Inclusion
    Oct 28, 2023
A note from Anneliese: Try to pace yourself according to the times posted. Try to stick to the times. If you go OVER and I see a lot more work than expected I will give you extra hours (we just need to communicate about that first). Just stay mindful of the time bc I don't want you to spend 7 hrs and only get 6.
Please use 1 email chain to respond to the whole class (except for first part of Hour 2 &3) -- Subject Line:"Starting the Conversation on Diversity: Thinking About Inclusion" Just keep sending Anneliese emails as replies to the last one for each hour -- try to do 1 email for each hour-long segment.

Start here -- Hr 1 -- review this video (16 minutes) and send me an email (just keep replying to the email so we have 1 long thread) on the following (paragraph or 2 on each)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jK0gyQCoTs&t=58s

    1. Answer both questions from the beginning. Have you ever felt like you didn't belong? Have you ever made someone else feel like they didn't belong (and realized you did it -- most of thr time we don't realize it -- maybe think about this from daycare perspective -- with a family -- or generically as providers).
    2. Tell me a story that explains how this works in child care settings. Narrate a solid example -- tell the story from beginning to end -- give me an ending that excludes AND then ending part 2 -- an ending that fixes the exclusion and includes.
    3. If you were having a discussion with this woman after her talk, what would you say to her?
    4. From number 1 above, what are some groups over your life have made you feel unwelcome? What line of diversity (sexism, ageism, racial etc) applied? What were some strategies you used to make it work in those cases where you had to be part of the group for a while?
    5. Thinking about our moving forward and connecting with Spanish speakers this weekend -- based on this video -- what were we as a local union doing right? What were we doing not-so-right? What could we have done better? What could the Spanish speakers have done? (Inclusion is after all a 2 way street) What forces do you believe exacerbated the issues?
    Hr 2 and 3
Take a hard look at Appendix C Equity especially (there are diversity and inclusion elsewhere too).
Going thru the document, tell me page number and what diversity issues are addressed. (Inclusion, diversity, racism etc) breakdown with as much specificity (treat this as research and prepare as a report for the local union board -- send to email oregonccpt132@gmail.com subject line: "Preschool Promise Contract research on diversity deliverables"
    1. What are the top 3 ways (most helpful) that you found in the grant agreement to promote diversity issues? Identify the language found, discuss how and why each is so helpful in promoting diversity best practices.
    2. What's missing?
    3. How would you implement the equity practices in your program? What does it look like (what are you doing to implement)? What would you be doing differently? Any new policies you would develop?
    4. Any equity practices or other diversity practices you would NOT implement from this document? Tell me more.
    5. Going thru the document, tell me page number and what diversity issues are addressed.
    Hr 4
Watch these 2 videos. (45 minutes) take some notes immediately after each video -- 7 minutes each video -- on thr feelings you experienced while watching each, immediate impressions, anything that stood out, any quotes...
    Hr 5
First half hour to 40 minutes:
    1. What did you connect with in these videos? What resonated? Would you apply each of these ideas that resonated across the board 100% of the time or just sometimes or in rare cases? (How often does the idea apply?) Tell me more. Discuss.
    2. What if anything did you completely disagree with? Where do you think the idea came from? Why do you think this person had that idea? Discuss.
    3. Apply what was presented to child care and early care and education. Reflect. Discuss.
    Last 20-30 minutes --
Watch this video. (3.5 minutes) https://youtu.be/KoWL2lctDZ8
    1. What 3 points do you feel are MOST important.
    2. How could our union use the info in this video for bargaining at the table with state?
    3. If you were to share this video with your legislators, what would be your 2 talking points? Create an "elevator speech" of not more than 2 minutes (the time it takes you to say it out loud) that you would give to a legislator on those 2 most important talking points from the video.
    HR 6
Watch these videos (be sure to take notes if you think you will need them).
The last one is the longest one.
    1. What unique message did any of these videos have? Were the unique messages important?
    2. Any differences between messages? (Specifically was their conflicting information?)
    3. Discuss anything you disagreed with (refer to video 1, 2 or 3).
    4. In your own words, what is equity v equality? Which one is more important in ECE? WHY?
    5. Discuss 5 examples of how an ECE program can build equity into their program for children and/or families.
Send me a text (971-204-9110) with your full name & "Starting the Convo is done"
OPTIONAL: Send an evaluation to aolin@oregonafscme.org subject line "Eval Starting the Convo" and answer the following questions scale of 1 to 10 -- 1 being an "absolutely yes" and 10 being an "absolutely not".
