Reflective Activity: (10 minutes) by email (subject line: Reflective Activity O&A Methods for I/T) to the instructor (Anneliese -- anneliese.sheahan@gmail.com). Fold a sheet of paper into thirds (hamburger style). Copy the chart below onto the page using the 3 columns for each of the headings K, W, L. Reflect and use a KWL chart (complete the K and the W sections). K stands for "what you already know about observation and assessment of infants and toddlers." W stands for "what information you want." Save this activity to finish at the end of class with L -- "what you learned."

1. Visit the following website: (2 hrs)
beyou.edu.au/resources/news/
&
Answer the following questions to the "L" section of your KWL chart.
& 2.Use this link: www.beyou.edu.au/resources/
&
3.Use this link: www.beyou.edu.au/resources/
&
4. Using and email to the instructor, answer the following question: What is your role? (please use the subject line: "Beyou BETLS observation tool. My role.") Add a note about what you learned on the KWL chart about the tool and guide as well as the health continuum.
&
5. At the bottom of the mental-health-continuum, open the "+" (the tool) and download it as a pdf. Print the tool. Use it to observe and access a child in your program -- send Anneliese a photo of the finished product -- minus the child's name. The directions are above the pdf download link on the web page.
&
6. Check out this link: http://
(1 hr) Review the entire document. In an email to Anneliese answer the following questions: (subject line: "resources for early learning ECE assessments")
&
7. Check out this link: https://childcareta.acf.
Watch the first video -- titled Teachers Document Observation and in an email, answer the questions to the right of the video (30 minutes)
&
Watch the 3rd video -- titled Watch Elijah and in an email, answer the questions to the right of the video. (30 minutes)
&
In both cases, please use the title of the video as the subject line. Thanks.
&
8. Next, watch the video (scroll down) titled A Walk to the Park TWICE (read on before you watch) -- answer the questions to the right after watching the video twice. The first time you watch the video, observe from the position of the program director observing and assessing program policies/practices and staff doing their job. The second time you watch the video, observe from the position of the teacher -- observe and assess the children and the activity. (30 minutes)
Please make sure to use the title of the video as the subject line text. Thanks.
&
Note:It is important to not just focus observation and assessment on the children but also on the program to make sure that it is Developmentally Appropriate and that the environment (the people, the places and the things) makes sense for the infants and toddlers in your program.
&
9. (1 hour ) Watch the video here titled Book and Housekeeping Play -- it's short and you will practice taking anecdotal notes as part of the observation cycle.
For more on anecdotal notes see here -- www.raiselearning.com.au/
&
&
10. Make at least 4 example anecdotal notes (make up names and specific info for each child using the video in #9 or use other videos on the website -- just note which title you used for each note) and send in email or by photos of the notes themselves. https://childcareta.
&
11. Check out the other assessment methods on the "raiselearning.com" resource from #9. Answer the following questions. (1 hour) Send the answers by email with the subject line: O&A Methods for I/T Activity 11)
& 12. Practice using the Diary/Journal -- Using "Reflective Observations" method from the raiselearning.com list of strategies for recording observations (you don't need to portfolio) using the video Facilitating Exploration of Objects (again make up names for the child you select). Select 1 child and create 1 entry from the video. (30 minutes) Send by email, subject line "O&A Methods for I/T Activity 12 Reflective Observations"
&
13. Using the children in your program (first names only please) create a Sociogram (if you need additional help just let Anneliese know -- she will walk you through it) -- Observe children in your program for 20 minutes (continuous 20 minutes). Complete a simple diagram or overlay the diagram with a floor diagram of your program or outdoor space. (1 hr) Supply any details you wish in a written summary by email. Please use subject line "Sociograms Practice." The directions for how to use these is from the "raiselearning.com" site.
&
14. Using a child in your program (choose carefully and only include first name) Use the Event Samples method to observe and assess a specific behavior. Follow the example on page 4 of the "raiselearning.com" site. (1 hr) Use the subject line "O&A Methods for I/T Event Samples" to email the instructor.
&
15. (1 hr)
Professional Action: Which of the observation methods that you tried (and hadn't used before) will you implement as part of the observation and assessment cycle?
&
&
The Observation and Assessment Cycle is simple:
Observe a behavior --- Record what you observe -- Reflect on what you observe ---- Assess what you observed -- Plan for teaching for developmental learning --- Implement the teaching -- (back to) Observe to see if learning occurred and if not, continue the cycle.
&
&
Based upon the practice samples above, what assessments would you make for different children in your program? Which methods work better for infants and which ones are better to use with toddlers? Send by email the answers to these 2 questions subject line "O&A Methods for I/T Assessments and Methods."
*&
&
Additionally, Please write (if you didn't already) your interpretation of what happened and what learning opportunities you can create for that child. As you decide what individualized activities or learning you will provide for each child, keep in mind the different domains of development (and include them in your assessment here) Physical, Social-Emotional, Ways Children Learn, Cognitive, Language/Communication. Basically, how will you address or use what you observed to help the child's development (the assessment phase of Observation and Assessment Cycle). Include this in the same email as above.
&
Make note in the "L" section of your chart any additional info you would like to include and send the final assignment to the instructor with the subject line " O&A Methods for I/T final chart".
&
&
Complete the evaluation posted with this class and email a scanned or picture copy to aolin@oregonafscme.org (do NOT send it to the instructor and do NOT put your name on it if you wish to remain anonymous to the instructor). You should receive your certificate within 5 business days once everything is turned in.
